Types Of Framing

Closed Framing

This is when the art work is placed directly against the glass without a mount. Often used to mount posters or other lower value pieces. We would advise against this style if your artwork has value or if you intnention is preservation. The act of placing the face of the work against the glass my cause long term deterioration as a result of condesation or moisture.

Window Mount

Perhaps the most common style of picture frame would be with a window mount. A bevelled edged window is cut from the mountboard to keep the artwork away from the glass as well as providing an appealling aesthetic. Mountboards are available in a range of colours and thicknesses.

Float Mount

This is when the art work is "floated" away from the mountboard backing, by either another mountboard or foam core. The glass is held in place by fillets which hold the artwork away from the glass. This style of framing suits artwork on a heavier substrate or with a deckled edge for a contemporary box look.

Lay on Window Mount

A standard window mount is used to keep the work away from the glass but is cut slight larger to show the edges. the artwork is hinged to a matching board placed underneath. This style allows for a floating effect yet traditional look without the need for fillets.
